Usual traveler? Do you commonly travel because of business? The bad news is that you are vulnerable! Business travelers are quite defenseless because they often carry sensitive data, personal and professional on different devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets. The good news? We are here to give you some tips and tricks to increase your safety when travelling! Here are some of them:

  • Lock your device. Make sure your devices (smartphones, laptops and tablets) have a PIN number/fingerprint lock configured. If somebody steals your device, this is a first line of defense against a security breach. As an additional recommendation, while travelling, change the PIN you regularly use.

  • Think before you connect. Before you connect to any public Wi-Fi (e.g. airport, hotel, café) be sure to confirm the name of the network and exact login procedures with appropriate staff to ensure that the network is legitimate. Avoid conducting sensitive activities, such as online shopping, banking, or sensitive work, when using a public wireless network and only use sites that begin with “https://”. Using your mobile network connection is generally more secure than using a public wireless network.

  • Disable auto connection. Devices usually offer the possibility to automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks as you pass through them. This may be a nice feature at home, but it is very dangerous when traveling. Make sure this is disabled and you connect manually to WiFi each time you want to access a WiFi hotspot.

  • Don’t share your location. By sharing your location, you make it easy for a criminal to determine that you’re not in your hotel room or at your home, leaving your personal belongings in these areas vulnerable. Limit the information you post online to avoid these types of attacks.

  • Update your mobile software. Keep your operating system software and apps updated in order to improve your device’s ability to defend against malware.

  • Install and maintain updated antivirus. Install an antivirus, keep it updated and perform periodic scans to add an additional layer of security to your device. You can also install a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for hiding your location information or an app lock tool for adding extra protection to sensitive apps.

  • Disable Bluetooth. Bluetooth signals can come from anywhere. If your Bluetooth is left on, a malicious individual nearby can connect to your phone and potentially hack into your device. Keep Bluetooth disabled as much as possible while traveling abroad.

  • Activate remote erasure capabilities. Activate “lock/erase my device” capabilities so, in case of device loss or robbery, you can erase all data on your phone.

  • Back-up your information. If your phone is lost/stolen, in combination with the aforementioned point related to remote erasure, you will want to recover all the information lost. Make sure you have all your information regularly backed up in another device or in a Cloud in order to be able to recover it if needed.

  • Common sense. Don’t click any suspicious links, don’t enter suspicious websites, and don’t leave your devices unattended in public places!
